With a one year USDA grant, EFCWest is working with small Tribes throughout California, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico.
The purpose of this project is to provide solid waste management technical assistance and training, through direct and indirect assistance to small federally recognized Tribes. Through October 2022, EFCWest will be providing one-on-one direct consultations, workshops and webinars with rural and remote Tribes that fit the following criteria:
§ Populations less than 2,500,
§ Household income less than 80% of their state SNMHI, and
§ Populations with higher than 20% living below the federal poverty level.
This project is designed to empower Tribal environmental programs and governments with tools and training that increase innovation in problem solving while improving their waste management infrastructure and protecting Tribal environments. By becoming more effective managers of their waste, Tribes are better able to realize their capacity to improve their reservation’s quality of life through waste prevention, new economic opportunities and reduced reliance on external funding sources.
EFCWest is providing technical and training assistance in four specific areas:
§ Composting,
§ Recycling and Reuse,
§ Emerging Contaminants, and
§ Illegal Dumping.
